Is it true that when Edward VIII abdicated, the line of succession ceased?

Edward not only abdicated, he didn't have any children. So it's not so much THE lign of succession ceased, but HIS lign of succession ceased. Had he not abdicated, there wouldn't have beeen a son to succeed him anyway, and so his next male relative would be next in line for the throne - in this case, his brother Bertie (George VI). Bertie couldn't be side-stepped! That's not how succession works
